David E. Artman, Schererville, IN
(e-mail 5/97):
Q:
"The first volume of the dailies states that you
will eventually reprint the entire run, but didn't
the strip begin at least a year earlier than 1959?
The first book seems to jump right into a strip
where the characters are pretty well already
established. I seem to recall seeing somewhere
strips showing how Rick and Deuces Wilde began
Conniption, etc. What happened to those
strips?"
A:
Very observing! You are
quite right. You will find the answers--and the
first year's dailies-- in the latest Rick O'Shay reprint book,
"Rick O'Shay, The Dailies: 1958."
Q:
"I had read in some comics
work some time ago that the strip originally was
set in contemporary times and only later moved to
its Wild West setting, and your notes in the
dailies collections bear this out. When exactly did
you make the transition, and how did you do
it?
A:
"The answer can be found in
"Rick O'Shay, Hipshot and Me, A Memoir by Stan
Lynde" on page 150, paragraph 3 as follows: "In
1969 I finally changed the strip's time frame to
the old west and adopted a centennial theme: The
date in RICK was set at exactly 100 years earlier
than the date the strip appeared. Thus, 1969 became
1869, and historical figures Wild Bill Hickok,
Jesse and Frank James, and Cole Younger made cameo
appearances."

Q:
In the "Shooting Hoops"
story, (Rick
O'Shay Dailies: 1963-1964),
page 90, the story jumps from 12/28 to 1/6. It
appears a week is missing."
A:
This is true. The cartoon
strips for this book came out of a book of proofs
provided by a syndicate employee. That week was
missing from the proofs. This fact was noticed by
several observing fans.
Q:
"Pages 72 and 73 are
reversed" (ed. same book). "Can you shed some light
on this?"
A:
Both Stan and I handle the
pages during clean-up and somehow they "crossed."
Our apologies.
Q:
"And I've another question.
I saw that your last name is Lynde.....Are you his
wife or daughter?? Just curious."
A:
I am Stan's wife, friend,
fan and publisher of his work.

Ola Alperud, Sweden. (e-mail
5/97) Semic published the
Rick O'Shay dailies in Fantomen magazine. Semic also
published the dailies from Stan's second western strip, Latigo.:
Q:
"Rick O'Shay with Hipshot
is that a comic that still is being made or has
Stan Lynde just quit doing that. I'm wondering
`cause it ain't published in Sweden anymore. Not
what I know anyway. And if he doesn't,
why??"
A:
Stan quit doing the strip
in 1977 due to a contract disagreement he had with
the syndicate. During the early days of cartooning
creators signed contracts with a "work for hire"
basis, which gave the syndicate complete rights to
the work. Also, you may have followed the Rick
O'Shay Dailies reprint work done by Semic Press in
Sweden in their Fantomen magazine, who completed
the dailies and are now publishing "SLY FOX",
Stan's new cartoon strip.
Hal Hall, Bryan, TX (e-mail

Q:
"Back in January, I wrote
asking for an opinion on how to get a complete copy
of The
Dailies: 1963-1964. My
copy came with pages 174 and 175
blank."
A:
I remember the letter.
Sorry about the confusion. I should not have
numbered 174 and 175. They are purposely blank.
When a book is printed, it is laid out in folios of
8's. We had two blank pages left over. This is
typical in publishing. My compulsion to number
pages is what got me in trouble.
Q:
"Any idea when the
1965-1966 daily book will be out? Looking forward
to more of Rick and Hipshot."
A:
Sorry, but we've decided
not to publish additional Rick O'Shay daily material at
present. Possibly at some future date.

Q:
"Is "A Month of Sundays -
The Best of Rick O'Shay" going to be the only
volume you plan on printing for the Sunday strips?
I would like to be able to have the entire run of
Sunday strips, in color, to add to the
series."
A:
Due to the high cost of
color printing, we do not expect to be printing any
more "color" Rick O'Shay Sundays. You will find
some great black and white Sunday pages in the
upcoming Rick
O'Shay Dailies:1958 reprint
book. This book wasn't printed earlier because we
did not have all the strips available when we first
started this project. Therefore we have added black
and white Sunday pages to complete an otherwise
small book.
Feel free to email
us with your question.
We'd love to see your name here.
