HAPPY
BIRTHDAY, BOSS
From the day my comic strip Rick O'Shay
began, back in April of 1958, I resolved to avoid
the Santa Claus/Easter Bunny approach to the two
major Christian holidays and try to portray
something of their true meaning. The Sunday page
for December 23, 1973 is the prime example of that
decision. It featured my character Hipshot
Percussion, and is without question the single most
popular cartoon I've ever done.

ELK
HUNT
The Sunday pages of Rick O'Shay always
featured an annual high-country hunting trip and
the pursuit of "meat for the winter." In one of the
most popular of these pages, Hipshot secretly backs
up young Quyat's shot as the boy claims his first
bull elk. Many an older, more experienced hunter
has done ~ for a younger one, and it was done for
me when I was a kid. Later, of course, when I
became an old guy, I did it for a few kids
myself.

EASTER
"Hard-boiled but soft-centered" describes
Hipshot Percussion pretty well. In this Easter
Sunday page, the gunslinger rudely rejects an
invitation to attend church services with the folks
down in the valley and rides instead to the high
and shining mountains, where he worships privately
and in his own manner. That's one way to do
it.

MODERATION
Another tradition in Rick O'Shay was
Hipshot's annual excruciating hangover. Always
published in the comic section of newspapers on the
Sunday nearest New Year's Day, this yearly entry
always drew letters of sympathy--and, I suspect,
empathy--from readers. Over the years, I must have
produced more than a dozen or two cartoons on the
subject, and while hangovers may not be funny, I
believe being human is.

BELLE
STARR
Does your dog run in circles, barking happily
and wagging the entire back half of his body when
you come home? Does he sometimes jump up on you
with mindless love and muddy paws? Does your cat
greet you with a throaty meow and trot out to say
"welcome back" as it blissfully rubs itself against
your legs? Of course it does; of course they do. So
does Hipshot's live-in feline companion, Belle
Starr. However, as Hipshot patiently explains,
"There is some difference between a tree and a
horse's leg, Belle Starr."

|
DENTIST
Hasn't everyone had an encounter with a
friendly, talkative dentist who fills your oral
cavity with cotton, hardware, and fingers and then
proceeds to ask you a variety of questions? In this
popular Sunday page, Hipshot finds his own answer
to that frustrating circumstance--he declares a
time-out and answers all preceding questions at
once.

John
11:25 Print
Some years ago Stan had a renewal of his
Christian faith through his participation in the
Cursillo movement.
Stan was working on his comic strip LATIGO
late one night in his Montana studio when the
vision came to him. It came with power, and with
unsual clarity, and it took him completely by
surprise. He clearly saw a representative of the
crucified and risen Christ, superimposed against
the background of the universe. Although he had
never seen this done artistically before, this
vision would not leave him alone. It seemed to him
that his unsought vision expressed the Biblical
truth that Christ both died a cruel death in
atonement for our sins and that He defeated death
for us all with His resurrection and
ascension.
